  • fourthly, Grade 4– Remain prolapsed.

3. External Haemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are situated on the surface of the anal opening and are covered by the skin.

Usually, it is unnoticeable but sometimes feel as a lump around the anal opening.

4. Thrombosed hemorrhoids

Whenever there is the formation of the blood clot within the haemorrhoidal tissue is referred to as thrombosed hemorrhoids.

The blood clot may form in internal as well as external hemorrhoids. However, thrombosed hemorrhoids are not dangerous but it is more painful.

  • Due to portal hypertension.
  • Obesity.
  • Low fiber diet.
  • Abnormal posture or prolonged sitting.
  • Hereditary.

  • Mucous discharge- particularly in prolapsed hemorrhoids.
  • Anemia- in longstanding cases of bleeding hemorrhoids.

Although all the symptoms of hemorrhoids are not present simultaneously but depend on the type of hemorrhoids persist.

How are hemorrhoids diagnosed?

Early diagnosis is important for the cure of hemorrhoids. It involves

  1. Inspection– It involves looking around the anal region for swelling, lump or tenderness. External hemorrhoids and prolapsed hemorrhoids can be diagnosed easily by inspection.
  2. Digital Examination- cannot give any information about the internal hemorrhoids unless thrombosed.
  3. Proctoscopy- It will help in the diagnosis of internal hemorrhoids.

How to prevent hemorrhoids?

Although, Some lifestyle changes and, healthy eating habits can help to prevent hemorrhoids. These are as follows-

  • Avoid straining while passing stool.
  • Regular Exercise.
  • Have plenty of water which will help to reduce constipation.
  • Have a glass of warm water in the morning.
  • Add more fibers or roughage in the diet.
  • Avoid fast food or junk food that causes constipation.
  • Avoid several medications such as painkillers which causes constipation.
  • Try not to delay the urge for the stool.
  • Avoid long standing sitting in the toilet.
  • Avoid spicy food.
  • Add more green leafy vegetables in the diet.

What are the measures adopted to treat hemorrhoids?

Treatment of hemorrhoids depends upon the type and nature of hemorrhoids. The various treatment methods are adopted such as-

Conservative treatment-

  • Use of the hemorrhiodal creams and vasline jelly.
  • Use of the analgesic to reduce pain.
  • Provided by the laxatives that relieve constipation.
  • Warm water steam application.

Non- surgical and surgical treatment-

Ligation and excision-

It is suitable in case of prolapsing hemorrhoids but it is very painful method.


Haemorrhoidectomy refers to the removal of the hemorrhoids with the help of the scalpel. It is the only mode of treatment for 3 grade, 4 grade and external hemorrhoids. It involves-

  • Closed haemorrhoidectomy.
  • Submucous resection.
  • Circular stapled haemorrhoidectomy
  • Endostapling technique.

What are the complications of hemorrhoids?

Although the complications of hemorrhoids are rare and are found in about 5% of the patient. The complication of hemorrhoids includes as follows-

Thrombosis- Thrombosis mainly occurs in the external hemorrhoids. Thrombosed hemorrhoids causes severe pain and itching.

Gangrene or ulceration– It occurs secondary to thrombosis.

Perianal sepsis- It may occur in complicated cases of hemorrhoids.

Strangulation– It refers to the blockage of arteries feeding the haemorrhoidal tissue which causes severe haemorrhoidal pain.

Infection– Infection occurs mainly in the bleeding hemorrhoids due to invading bacteria, as a result, severe pain occurs while passing the stool.
