Depression is defined as the state of mind representing feeling of sadness, unhappiness, loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities. So it is important to have knowledge about Depression types sign symptoms and treatment.

WHAT IS DEPRESSION?

The term depression simply means a state of feeling sadness. It is a commonly used term for all the types of depression related disorders such as major depressive disorder, clinical depression, bipolar depression, dysthymic, psychotic depression etc. To differentiate them it is important to have knowledge about  DEPRESSION: TYPES SIGN SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT.

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Mood swings
  • Headache or body ache may present.

PERSISTENT DEPRESSIVE DISORDER (DYSTHYMIA)-

It is a mood disorder characterised by chronic depressed condition associated with feeling of inadequacy, hopelessness, lack of interest in day to day life.

SYMPTOMS OF PERSISTENT DEPRESSIVE DISORDER (DYSTHYMIA)-

  • Loss of interest in any kind of work
  • Feeling of hopelessness
  • Lack of energy
  • Sleeplessness or oversleeping

  • Decreased productivity or activity

  • Social isolation

CYCLOTHYMIC DISORDER-

It is a rare mood disorder characterised by the alternate episodes of depression and hypomania. It is less severe form of bipolar disorder.

There are alternate high and low intensity symptoms which are as follows:

BIPOLAR DISORDER-

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterised by the alternating episodes of depression and mania. It is also known as manic depressive illness or manic depression.

During the manic phase high intensity symptoms can be observed such as-

  • Delusion of self importance
  • High level of energy and creativity
  • Aggressiveness and irritability
  • Increased sexual drive
  • Insomnia

  • Delusion and hallucination

During depressive phase low intensity symptoms are observed as follows-

  • Low in energy
  • Loss of pleasure

  • Social isolation

ANTENATAL AND POSTNATAL DEPRESSION-

Antenatal and postnatal depression is a depression condition during the pregnancy period and after the delivery of the baby. It may be seen in mother as well as father.

SYMPTOMS OF ANTENATAL AND POSTNATAL DEPRESSION-

  • Lack of energy or tiredness
  • Low libido
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Depressed mood
  •  Feeling of guilt
  • Aversion from partner

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)-

It is a depressive state of mind that person experience in the particular time of the year or in the particular season. It is of periodic nature.

SYMPTOMS OF SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)-

Symptoms regarding SAD during winter onset (or winter depression)-

Increased sleepiness or drowsiness

  • Tiredness
  • Weight gain
  • Sadness and hopelessness
  • Change in appetite

Symptoms regarding SAD during summer or spring onset (summer depression)-

  • Poor appetite
  • Weight loss
  •  Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia

TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION:

The treatment of depression depends upon the individual behaviour towards his/her life. There are many therapies for it but the best way to get rid of depression is to change lifestyle and follow a good diet and regime in the guidance of your physician. Here are some therapies as follows-

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy-

It is a kind of conversation with the individual about his modified negative thoughts, behaviour accompanied by mentally stressed condition.

Due to changed life situations and under continuous stressful condition individual way of thinking undergoes several changes especially if there is no one around him/her to support mentally.

  • Behaviour therapy-

The therapy includes talk session with the person about his modified harmful thoughts associated with psychological distress.

  • Psychotherapy-

It includes treatment of the mental disorders with the help of  counselling.
