Respiration
It is a biological process by which an organism obtains atmospheric air and utilizes only oxygen for the breakdown of food to generate energy. Respiration and Its Types| Healthpathy
Types Of Respiration:
- Aerobic Respiration.
- Anaerobic Respiration.
Aerobic Respiration
- The Respiration which takes place in the presence of oxygen inside the cell is called aerobic respiration…
- In this process complete breakdown of food takes place into carbon dioxide and water.
- A large amount of energy is produced ( 38 ATP)
- This reaction takes place in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of the cell.
C6 H12 O6 +O2 ———–> CO2 + H2O
Oxidation
Examples– Most plants, animals, birds, humans, and other mammals.
Anaerobic Respiration: Respiration and Its Types| Healthpathy
The respiration which takes place in the absence of O2 is known as Anaerobic Respiration.
An incomplete breakdown of food takes place.
Less amount of heat is released (2ATP)
Example- Bacteria and certain fungi like yeast.
Mechanism Of Respiration: Respiration and Its Types| Healthpathy
Breathing- Forcefully intake of atmospheric air through the lungs and removal of foul air along with carbon dioxide is called breathing.
Steps of Breathing
(A) Inhalation – The Forceful intake of atmospheric air into the lungs called inhalation.
In the case of inhalation, the intercostal muscles present between two ribs get a contract and increase the surface area of the rib cage by upward and outward movement of the ribs.
At the same time, the diaphragm moves downward to increase the surface area of the ribcage for inhalation.
(B) Exhalation – The removal of Carbon dioxide along with foul air through the lungs is called exhalation.
In the case of exhalation, the intercostal muscles present between the two ribs get to relax.
Difference Between Anaerobic Respiration And Aerobic Respiration
Aerobic Respiration
- Takes Place in the presence of oxygen.
- The complete breakdown of food takes place.
- A large amount of energy is produced (38ATP).
- Takes Place Inside the cytoplasm and mitochondria.
- Examples – Plants, Animals, and some other Microorganisms.
Anaerobic Respiration: Respiration and Its Types| Healthpathy
- Takes Place in the absence of oxygen.
- An incomplete breakdown of food takes place.
- Less amount of energy is produced ( 2 ATP)
- Takes Place Inside the cytoplasm only.
- Example – Bacteria and certain fungi like yeast.
